Lows All-wheel drive isn't standard, top trims are more expensive than outgoing model, thirsty optional V-8. Verdict The new Grand Cherokee is improved in nearly every way, but the upcharge for the Jeep brand name may turn off value-oriented buyers. Overview When you close your eyes and think of a Jeep, it's likely that the rough-and-tumble Wrangler comes to mind, but the Grand Cherokee is every bit as important to the success of the famed off-road brand in terms of sales. Its appeal is bolstered by the fact that it pairs impressive off-road capability with on-road refinement, offers lots of available luxury appointments and features, and has the rugged, outdoorsy look Jeep buyers love. We like it too, in fact, and gave it an Editors' Choice award. A trio of powertrains are offered, including familiar V-6 and V-8 options and a new plug-in-hybrid variant that Jeep calls 4xe. While rear-wheel drive is standard on models with the V-6, there are no less than three different all-wheel-drive systems available to help tackle whatever your lifestyle requires, whether that's simply commuting through snowy weather or crawling rocks in Moab. What's New for 2022? For the 2021 model year, Jeep launched a new generation of the Grand Cherokee, but it only offered the new model as a the L three-row variant (reviewed separately) alongside the previous-generation, two-row GC. For the 2022 model year, the Grand Cherokee sheds its old bones with the introduction of a two-row body style riding atop the new architecture. Pricing and Which One to Buy Laredo: $40,120 Altitude: $45,225 Limited: $46,440 Trailhawk: $56,030 Overland: $56,035 4xe PHEV: $57,660 Limited 4xe PHEV: $59,495 Summit: $60,095 Trailhawk 4xe PHEVÇ: $64,280 Summit Reserve: $66,575 Overland 4xe PHEV: $67,555 Summit 4xe PHEV: $71,515 Summit Reserve 4xe PHEV: $76,095 The Grand Cherokee starts thousands higher than rivals such as the Kia Telluride and the Hyundai Palisade–consider it the Jeep tax–and its higher trims are priced similarly to some luxury SUVs. That being said, we think the Limited model represents the best mix of features, besting the base Laredo with more equipment to satisfy luxury buyers. The Limited comes standard with leather upholstery, a power-operated rear liftgate, heated front and rear seats, power-adjustable front seats, interior ambient lighting, automatic high-beam headlamps, remote start, and more. We'd spring for the Entertainment Group package, which adds the larger 10.1-inch infotainment display and a nine-speaker Alpine stereo. We'd also choose the Lux Tech Group II package, with rain-sensing windshield wipers, a wireless phone charger, perforated leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column, a digital rearview mirror, second-row sunshades, a 360-degree exterior camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and a collision avoidance feature that helps when traveling through intersections. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Like the last generation Grand Cherokee, the new one is powered by either a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. Jeep also offers its plug-in-hybrid 4xe powertrain that introduces electrification to its family SUV. Rear-wheel drive is standard with the base V-6, but all-wheel drive is standard on Grand Cherokees with the V-8 or plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Several different all-wheel-drive systems are available, including an electronically locking limited-slip differential. A Trailhawk model with more robust off-road equipment and greater capability is available, too, and it features an adjustable air suspension that provides up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance and a disconnecting sway bar that allows greater wheel articulation for tackling difficult terrain. During our initial test drive, we were impressed with the Grand Cherokee's composed, smooth ride and found both the V-6 and V-8 engines to be plenty perky. At our test track, our V-6–powered Summit test vehicle managed a respectable 7.4-second run to 60 mph; the off-road oriented Trailhawk completed the same test in 7.7 seconds. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG Fuel economy estimates for the V-6–powered Grand Cherokee are typical of the mid-size SUV segment at 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway when paired with rear-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive drops each of those estimates by 1 mpg; the V-8 model is rated for 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Thanks: 🤍 🤍 2022 Jeep Compass Starting at: $27,615 Highs Handsome exterior design, packed with desirable modern tech, Trailhawk lives up to Jeep's off-road image.Lows Lethargic gas powertrain, can't tow as much as the Cherokee, poor value proposition.Verdict The Compass is attractive and elevated by Jeep cred, but it still suffers from a host of compromises. Overview The 2022 Jeep Compass is a compact crossover that enjoys the brand's rugged cachet and can be outfitted to actually excel off-road. It fills the space between the smaller Renegade and the slightly larger Cherokee and competes against alternatives such as the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4. While we've derided the Compass's unremarkable interior in the past, its cabin now has a fresher aesthetic with more modern features. Its apathetic four-cylinder gas engine is also a point of contention, but the possibility of a new plug-in hybrid would give the lineup a powertrain that's becoming more common in this segment. Of course, Jeep's image is based on getting off the beaten path, and the Trailhawk trim is the best equipped to accomplish that. The Cherokee may offer even more capability, but the 2022 Compass is arguably prettier and more affordable. What's New for 2022? For 2022, Jeep is giving the Compass lineup a host of updates that make it more desirable. Along with a revised front end that looks more upscale, its interior benefits from a new dashboard design and a new tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system with the latest Uconnect software. A new Latitude Lux trim is now available and comes standard with all-wheel drive, a leather interior, and the new larger touchscreen. The lineup could also add a plug-in hybrid that uses the 4xe (pronounced four by E) moniker. Pricing and Which One to Buy Sport: $27,615 Latitude: $29,280 Latitude Lux: $31,990 Limited: $33,790 Trailhawk: $34,015 (RED) Edition: $35,685 High Altitude: $36,385 We'd maximize the Compass's value by sticking with the base Sport model. Those who want all-wheel drive, which trades the standard six-speed automatic for a nine-speed, will spend an extra $1500. Along with the Cold Weather package (heated front seats and steering wheel, remote start, and more), we'd choose the Advance Safety and Safety and Security packages. The latter brings a mix of blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, and more. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The four-cylinder engine that powers every Compass is lethargic, and the optional nine-speed automatic transmission is slow to execute shifts. All front-wheel models are equipped with a six-speed automatic. Buyers who choose all-wheel drive will enjoy a variety of terrain-conquering drive modes. An automatic setting allows the car to direct torque to the wheels as it sees fit, while Snow, Sand, and Mud modes allow varying amounts of wheelslip for improved traction. Trailhawk models add a low "crawler" gear ratio and a Rock mode, which keeps the Compass in first gear and directs torque only to the wheels that can find grip. The Compass feels more agile than its tall, boxy profile would suggest, responding ably to inputs from the nicely weighted steering wheel. There is some lean during tight cornering, but overall the Compass feels well-controlled, solidly planted, and capable on the road. An off-road course we braved when we first drove the Compass revealed that it can hold its own at least over moderate obstacles, and we noticed nary a stumble from the all-wheel-drive system. The potential 4xe plug-in hybrid will offer an eco-friendly alternative to the regular gas-powered variants. However, we haven't driven or tested that version yet. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo With an attractive dashboard and improved features, the 2022 Compass looks to be an improvement versus the previous model year, which was plagued by nondescript styling and unremarkable interior materials. Plus, its interior is comfortable, functional, and has enough space for four adult passengers. The back seat is neither the largest nor the smallest of the crossovers in this diverse class. Its high seat bottoms in the back seat mean that passengers' legs are fully supported, and even long rides can be comfortable. Despite its boxy exterior and what at first appears to be competitive cargo volume, the Compass is not the roomiest of its set. It has enough luggage space for an airport run but long trips could be a squeeze. Inside its upscale cabin, standard three-row seating means room for the whole family, and an abundance of high-tech features is sure to keep everyone entertained. Along with all the latest and greatest driver assists as well as the ability to tow almost 10,000 pounds, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer looks to conquer an entirely new frontier: high-priced luxury motoring. What's New for 2022? Jeep resurrects the Grand Wagoneer moniker for 2022, positioning it as a more luxurious version of the also-all-new Wagoneer. Pricing and Which One to Buy Series I: $88,995 Series II: $95,995 Obsidian: $100,995 Series III: $105,995 Series III Premium: $109,980 The Series II trim level looks to be the best value among the Grand Wagoneer lineup, which can easily exceed six figures. The Series II comes standard with 22-inch wheels, a two-tone roof, a 10.3-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, nicer leather-trimmed upholstery, a rear-seat monitoring system, and additional driver assists such as night vision and a semi-autonomous drive mode. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Grand Wagoneer is motivated by a 6.4-liter V-8 that pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The engine generates 471 horsepower and 455 horsepower, which is more than both the 420-hp Escalade and the 450-hp Navigator. Of course, those who want an even mightier large luxury SUV should direct their attention towards the 483-hp Mercedes-Benz GLS580 or the 523-hp X7 BMW M50i. As with its domestic rivals, the Grand Wagoneer utilizes body-on-frame underpinnings, in this case derived from the Ram 1500 pickup truck. However, the Jeep features an independent rear suspension rather than the truck's solid rear axle, which should give the SUV a smoother ride and better handling. Along with several four-wheel-drive systems, the Grand Wagoneer offers an adaptive air suspension that can raise its ride height up to 3.6 inches or lower it by a half inch. It also boasts 10 inches of ground clearance, up to two feet of water-fording capability, and a max tow rating of 9860 pounds. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG With a 6.4-liter V-8 and standard four-wheel drive, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer isn't expected to be frugal when it comes to fuel economy. The cargo area behind the third row measures 27 cubic feet and stowing it provides 71 cubes behind the second row. Infotainment and Connectivity One of the most dazzling aspects of the Grand Wagoneer is its multifaceted infotainment system. Even without including the digital gauge cluster, the Jeep's dashboard is covered in screens. The main focus is the center stack, which packs a 12.0-inch center touchscreen that sits above a 10.3-inch touchscreen with controls for the HVAC system.
