The Jerusalem Chamber in the Abbey’s Deanery, the residence of the Dean of Westminster, has a pivotal role in the history of printed versions of the Holy Bible. It hosted the committees engaged on writing King James I’s Authorized Version of the Bible in 1611, the Revised Version in 1870, the New English Bible in 1961 and the Revised English Bible in 1989. St John’s Gospel reached its final form around AD 90–110, although it contains signs of origins dating back to AD 70 and possibly even earlier. Veteran British filmmaker Philip Saville directs the religious epic The Gospel of John| a production of the Canadian company Visual Bible International. This three-hour drama attempts to accurately follow the Gospel According to John| written sometime during the first century. The gospel contains four segments: an introduction to the nature of Jesus Christ; testimony by disciples and the presence of miracles; the Last Supper and crucifixion; and the appearance of the risen Christ. Henry Ian Cusick plays Jesus and Christopher Plummer provides voice-over narration. The Gospel of John was shown in a special presentation at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival. - The Gospel of John was written two generations after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is set in a time when the Roman Empire controlled Jerusalem. Although crucifixion was the preferred Roman method of punishment, it was not one sanctioned by Jewish law. Jesus and all his early followers were Jewish. The Gospel reflects a period of unprecedented polemic and antagonism between the emerging church and the religious establishment of the Jewish people.

The gospel of John is the fourth book of the New Testament, and the last gospel in the Bible. This video looks at the story and structure of this artistic, compelling narrative about Jesus. Learn more about the Gospel of John (and see the whiteboard outline) here: 🤍 A quick note on "the Jews" in this video. I think it's important to note three things that didn't make it into the video: 1) The gospel of John sometimes refers to "the Jews" in a rather sweeping way, but there were many Jews who believed in Jesus at this point in the story (John 12:9–11). Still, John draws a distinction for the reader when it comes to this part of the narrative: "Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea. Instead he withdrew to a region near the wilderness, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples." (John 11:54) 2) Passages that speak of the Jews rejecting and killing Jesus have been used to justify violence, injustice, hate, and prejudice against Jewish people for centuries. This is obviously wrong, and contrary to the teachings of Christ. 3) As if he could see this coming, the author of John overtly states at this point in the story that Jesus will "die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one." (John 11:51–52) While there's a distinction in the narrative here, the author himself seems to agree with the Apostle Paul that by the end of the story, "there is neither Jew nor Gentile […] for you are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:28)

Scholars have long argued that the Gospel of John named after Jesus' disciple John the Son of Zebedee was in fact written by someone else. Only later in Christian tradition was it ascribed to John. In that view, the author himself is not a "forger" that is, he did not claim to be a famous person knowing he was someone else. The book was *anonymous*: the author never names himself and so can't be blamed for later readers mistaking his identity. But in fact *is* there evidence that the author wanted his readers to think he was one of Jesus' closest disciples, and that he left hints for them in the book. If so and if he wasn't who he intimated he was isn't John a forgery?

John 17:17. “Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.” John 17:11. “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me”. John 17:21. “And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:” John 17:23. “I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me”. John 17:23 PERFECT is a pretty high bar, would Jesus ask God for something impossible to do? Most would think not. “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory..” John 17:24. Where I am is present tense, Jesus was already there and wants his present day followers to be there with him today as well. ."..that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. Jesus last plea to become one with his followers. John 17:26 I want to share something with you, likely it will be the first time you heard this. What you read in John 17: verse 11-21-22-23, is the only place in the Bible where Jesus said that. He never said that during his Ministry, nor was it mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. Jesus had a large healing ministry, he raised the dead, heal the sick, and fed 5000, etc. However, there is no mention of any of that in John 17. Jesus could have said, Father thank you for permitting me to raise the dead and heal many. I pray those that follow will do even greater miracles, so the World will believe thou has sent me. But instead Jesus ask God, to make them one so the World will believe. Jesus didn’t have the internet 2000 years ago, but the spirit of Christ is within his people today, who are using this technology. The Gospel of John is one of the most puzzling books of the New Testament, especially when it comes to understanding its view of Jews and Judaism. On one hand, Jesus is clearly described as a Jew who understands and teaches the law of Moses and who keeps Jewish customs and festivals. On the other hand, the Gospel condemns Jews, makes them guilty for the execution of Jesus, and even declares that their "father" is not Abraham, let alone God, but the Devil. How can one book so fully embrace Judaism and yet condemn it. And importantly, is this kind of vitriolic opposition to Jews and Judaism appropriately called "anti-semitism"? The answer will surprise many listeners. In this episode, Bart addresses: -How to define our terms - what do we mean by “anti-semitic”, and how does it relate to “anti-Judaism”? -When we consider how the Jewish people are treated and depicted in the gospels, there are three different groups to consider; the Jewish authorities, the people they governed, and Jesus and his followers. Do these seem like reasonable distinctions? -The Gospel of John doesn’t treat the first two groups kindly. Throughout the Gospel, the Jewish authorities are depicted as constantly trying to catch Jesus breaking the Mosaic law - are they just looking for any excuse to justify their attacks on him? -Does John's gospel differentiate between the Jewish *people* and the Jewish *authorities*? -John shows the Jewish people as being against both God and Jesus, for example in chapter 8:31-59, which is a conversation between Jesus and a group of unidentified Jewish people in the Temple, in which he calls them the children of the Devil. What should we make of this passage? -Are there exceptions to John’s apparent anti-semitism? -How did apocalyptic thinking feed into the response of John’s community after they were kicked out of the synagogue?

#apologetics #bible #gospels Just about every shred of evidence we have from manuscripts and early church fathers identifies John the son of Zebedee as the author of John’s Gospel. But if you read the book by itself, John isn’t explicitly identified by name. He refers to himself as ‘the beloved disciple.’ Because of that, skeptics like Bart Ehrman tell us that we’re clueless about who wrote it. Ehrman says: “The Gospel of John … is completely anonymous. The author does not tell us his name or identify himself in any way.” But before Bart was a twinkle in his daddy’s eye, 19th-century BF Westcott did some Batman-like detective work. Using only internal evidence, Westcott narrowed things down to John, the son of Zebedee, as the prime suspect for who wrote the Gospel. In this video, I summarize Westcott's arguments and conclude that John is the most logical suspect for the authorship of John's Gospel. This beginning was good, but when God’s creatures rejected his instructions, all creation spiraled into death.
