Mayo Clinic is among the first in the world to perform a spinal fusion surgery called TLIF with robotic assistance and incorporating spinal anesthesia, meaning the patient is awake. Dr. Selby Chen, a Mayo Clinic neurosurgeon, says it's important to have an innovative mindset. Performing the surgery while the patient is still awake, eliminates the risks associated with general anesthesia, while also allowing for faster and better recovery. There are also advantages from a surgeon's perspective. The robotic assistance enhances the accuracy of screw placement, leading to improved safety for patients. In the U.S., HPV is linked to about 70% of throat and mouth cancers. And more than 70% of those cancers are diagnosed in men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Treatment for throat and mouth cancers, also referred to as oropharyngeal or head and neck cancers, will depend on location and stage of the cancer as well as other factors. Dr. Phillip Pirgousis, a Mayo Clinic head and neck surgeon, says patients have safer, less invasive surgical treatments available to them thanks to ongoing innovation. Stroke is a medical emergency. The faster you get treatment, the better your chances are of recovering. May is Stroke Awareness Month to raise awareness about stroke prevention and treatment. It's also Women's Health Awareness Month. Mayo Clinic experts say women with stroke symptoms should not delay seeking treatment. They say some women don't realize the symptoms could be life-threatening, and don't get the care they need in time. Women ─ even young women ─ listen up, and learn about your risk of stroke. But there are differences, particularly for pregnant women and women on the pill because they have an increased risk of stroke. Dr. Maisha Robinson says prompt treatment of symptoms improves your chances of recovery. Symptoms include difficulty talking, walking or thinking; sudden vision changes; sudden, severe headache; or numbness or paralysis. If symptoms happen, call 911 — no matter how old you are. And to prevent stroke, you should manage health issues that increase your risk, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, excess weight and inactivity. And if you smoke, stop. The 2016 James H. Cassedy Memorial Lecture in the History of Medicine will feature Dr. W. Bruce Fye, MD, MA, Emeritus Professor of Medicine and the History of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, presenting a talk entitled "The Origins and Evolution of the Mayo Clinic from 1864 to 1939: A Minnesota Family Practice Becomes an International ‘Medical Mecca’." This presentation will describe the origins and international impact of the Mayo Clinic through 1939, the year that William J. and Charles H. Mayo died. Multispecialty group practice was invented at Mayo at the beginning of the twentieth century. A visiting Canadian surgeon wrote in 1906, “Specialization and cooperation, with the best that can be had in each department, is here the motto. Cannot these principles be tried elsewhere?” Dr. Fye will address the Mayo Clinic’s major (and underappreciated) role in the development of rigorous postgraduate (specialty) training. Unlike traditional academic medical centers that emphasize research, Mayo’s main mission has always been patient care. This patient-centered activity has been undertaken in an environment enriched by extensive programs devoted to specialty training and clinical research. The clinic’s long-standing culture of collaboration is cited as one of the key ingredients of its success. Only about 8% of patients who have cardiac arrest outside of a hospital survive. That rate is even lower for certain patients who do not respond to defibrillation. A new service being launched by Mayo Clinic Ambulance in Rochester, Minnesota, is hoping to improve outcomes and save more lives by getting patients faster access to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a form of life support that pumps blood outside of the body to a heart-lung machine, allowing the organs to rest and heal. Some babies can develop bright red birthmarks called hemangiomas. Dr. Megha Tollefson, a Mayo Clinic pediatric dermatologist, says they're technically tumors, but parents shouldn't let that name or their stark appearance worry them. They're more common among babies born preterm. And they can appear anywhere on the body, but commonly involve the head and neck areas. Another feature that might alarm parents is the rapid rate of growth. Dr. Tollefson says hemangiomas will continue to grow until children are about 6 to 9 months old. At that point, they typically stabilize, then go away slowly. Treatment usually isn't needed. However, Dr. Tollefson says if the hemangioma interferes with vision, other functions, has the potential to be cosmetically disfiguring, or is large or growing rapidly, babies should be evaluated for treatment. Dr. Brian Lacy says irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a chronic condition that affects the intestinal tract. It can cause painful stomach cramps, diarrhea and constipation. IBS is now categorized as a disorder of gut-brain interaction, which means that there’s a problem with how the gut and brain communicate with each other. He says stress plays a key role. There’s no cure for IBS, but symptoms can be managed. Try eating smaller, more frequent meals, and exercising regularly. Deep breathing and yoga are also helpful to reduce stress.
