Is PLASMA as good on MOBILE as on the desktop? - KDE Plasma Mobile review

Visit 🤍 for a 100$ credit on your new Linode account! I'm continuing my tour of the state of the various mobile versions of popular desktop environments, and it's time to take a look at Plasma Mobile, the version of KDE tailored for smartphones, and touch screens. Let's see how it's advanced and how it works Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 ## Plasma Mobile Plasma mobile looks very similar to an android experience: you've got your shortcuts, with a favorites bar on the bottom, and wiping up opens the app drawer, with all your installed applications. You can then long press these app icons to drag them to the main screen, and move them around, creating your own shortcut page. Creating a shortcut doesn't remove the app from the drawer, just like on Android. The main difference seems to be that you only get one page, and you can't drag apps to the right to create another screen. If you've used Android in the past, it's going to be a super familiar experience, down the fixed buttons at the bottom of the screen. The central one, with the plasma logo, brings you back to your home screen, hiding all open applications. The square on the left is the multitasking button, letting you see all your applications as small cards, that you can select, or close. Finally, the cross, on the right, is only active when you have an app opened. Tapping that will close the app completely, so it won't be in the multitasking menu anymore. As usual on most phone operating systems, you also get a top bar with the cellar signal strength, the date, and the various connections to wifi, bluetooth, plus the battery life. If you slide from the top to the bottom from this top bar, you get the usual quick toggles, and the notifications, just like you'd get on any other mobile OS. You can also long press on the homescreen, to change wallpapers. You get a short list of the ones that are installed, and a the familiar "Get new..." button, that works the same as on the regular desktop version KDE plasma: it opens a library of wallpapers that you can download in one click. You can also add widgets to your home screen, although the selection is more limited than what you get on the desktop, out of the box. Here again, you can download new ones and stick them where you want. ## Applications Plasma mobile comes with a bunch of applications preinstalled. You have your phone dialer, an address book, the usual calculator, a clocks app, a calendar and a beautiful weather app, a pretty nice looking audio player. The web browser is called Angelfish, and it's alright, if not the fastest thing I've ever used. Then you get a host of utilities: a file manager called Index, which works fine once you understand how to select items and interact with them, a video player, a PDF and document viewer, which is Okular, the same app you'll find on desktop KDE, a voice recorder, a terminal, and multiple chat apps, like Neochat, which is a matrix client, Spacebar, the SMS client that I couldn't get to start a new conversation, and telegram. You also have Koko, the image viewer, Megapixels, the camera app, Nota and Buho, 2 note taking applications, and Psensor, a temperature monitor. ## Discover Now, of course, there is a way to get more apps onto the phone, using Discover, Plasma's app store. The app itself works really well on mobile, with an adapted user interface. it lets you download updates to your applications and your whole system, and search for new applications, or add-ons. Unfortunately, the same issue applies here as on Phosh, which is there is no way to know if an app will work well on smartphones, or not. The app pages on Discover also lack some information: you don't get mobile screenshots, even from apps that support the mobile form factor, and you don't get any version history that I could find. ## Settings Now, any tour of a KDE Plasma desktop wouldn't be complete without a tour of the settings, and there are a few to look at. You get the aforementioned online accounts, letting you configure for example a Google or Nextcloud account easily, and the usual audio, bluetooth, cellular and hotspots settings, but you also get tons of personalisation options, including the colors of the interface, the icons, and the plasma style. You can also extensively configure the keyboard.

This feels AWESOME! - Manjaro Beta 12 with Plasma Mobile 5.25 First Impressions

In this video, I install the latest Manjaro ARM Beta 12 with KDE Plasma Mobile 5.25 on my PinePhone Pro and review new shell features! This somehow took the whole day to make, so please consider leaving a like, commenting some feedback, and sharing with friends. = Social Media = Mastodon: 🤍 Discord: 🤍 GitHub: 🤍 = Video Context = I recently bought a Linux-first phone called the PinePhone Pro from a company called Pine64. Pine64 made the hardware but none of the software for the device. However, there is a variety of software available that is created by the open-source software community. In this video, I use the terminal to update the packages (pieces of software) on the device. I then showcase some of the new changes in the software since the last release from Manjaro, the distribution I am using. The Apps of Plasma Mobile on my Pinephone Pro

I'm reviewing all of the apps of Manjaro's Plasma Mobile distribution! While Plasma Mobile when compared to Phosh is much more feature rich, it also tends to feel more buggy. Phosh is mostly a from-scratch reimplementation of Gnome 3 in a mobile phone factor meaning the maturity can't compare. Its nice that Plasma Mobile leverages the KDE technologies such as kwin for the compositor and maliit for the onscreen keyboard. Even if you do not like the interface, it is very configurable in standard KDE fashion. The apps included with Majaro are: Angelfish, Calculator, Calindori, Clip, Click, Discover, Elisa, Index, KDE Connect, Koko, Megapixels, Nota, Okular, Phone, Phonebook, Recorder, Settings, Spacebar, Terminal and Weather. Most of the apps have a polished UI. There are bugs, but you can tell how much Linux on mobile has come along. Having said that, it just isn't stable enough for normal users to start really using it as a daily driver. 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 #plasmamobile #pinephone #pinephonepro #kde #linux #mobile #phosh

Plasma Mobile in 2022

Plasma Mobile has seen surging interest in recent years alongside the growing community around mobile Linux devices. And during this time, the project has come a long way in becoming functional and usable for users. Lots of work had to go into the software stack, adapting Plasma, KDE Frameworks and other core components for a mobile context. New applications also had to be developed to suit the needs of the platform, as well as adhering to "convergence" where they would work regardless of the platform, whether it be on desktop or mobile. During this talk, Bhushan will be going over recent developments in the underlying Plasma Mobile stack, while Devin will be presenting the work that has been done in the shell and UI. We will also show the ways how community can contribute to Plasma Mobile project.

Linux Phone Keyboard Wars! Does Plasma Mobile or Phosh Have the better keyboard?

Today, Bitter tries out different Linux keyboards on his Pinephone Pro to find the one that is the best. Please enjoy the ride as you learn about the projects that power Linux virtual keyboards. Phosh uses Squeekboard as its primary keyboard. It is simple, but it works for basic input usage. Autocomplete does not work, which can sometimes be inconvenient, but at least it is easier to proofread your sentences. It also has an emoji keyboard and a keyboard for terminal input. Unfortunately, for languages where autocompletion is required, Squeekboard is a bit of a joke. Autocomplete has been a work in progress for Phosh for a year or two. Plasma Mobile uses the Maliit keyboard which has a longer history compared to Squeekboard and was originally developed by Nokia. It is full-featured and what you would expect out of a virtual keyboard for a phone. The look and feel are similar to what you would find on an Android keyboard. When shooting the video for this, I happened on a buggy version that left a funny side effect where you can scroll the keyboard. In the end, Plasma Mobile has the better keyboard even if I prefer the style of the one in Phosh. The Phosh keyboard has usability that is just beyond that of a tech demo but your mileage may vary. The only reason that Maliit lost in this review was because of the scrolling bug. Please don't take this review too seriously. Feel free to correct any of my mistakes in the comments! #linux #phone #keyboard #corgi #pinephone #review #phosh #plasmamobile #comedy

Ubuntu Touch on the Pinephone - is this the best Linux mobile interface?

The first 1000 people to use the link will get a free trial of Skillshare Premium Membership: 🤍 I already covered Phosh, the mobile port of GNOME, and Plasma Mobile, both running on the pinephone. Now it's time to take a look at the other main alternative for mobile Linux interfaces, the one that has been around for a while now: Ubuntu Touch, or Lomiri. Let's take a look at how well it runs Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 This shell is based on gestures starting from the screen edges. A short swipe from left to right will bring a launcher with the default applications pinned to it, and your current open applications as well, appearing on top of the pinned shortcuts. A longer swipe from the left edge will bring the whole list of applications. If you swipe from the right towards the left in a short motion, you'll switch to the next open app. If you make a long swipe from the right edge, then you'll get to a multitasking view, with apps displayed in a 3D layout. You can swipe an app's card up to close it, or tap an app to resume it. Finally, a swipe from the top edge of the screen will bring the notifications, and the quick settings, which don't display as on most other operating systems: they're in a straight line, that you can scroll from left to right, and tap each icon to get to a quick few shortcuts, like enabling or disabling a specific feature, or dive deeper into the settings. ## The Applications Out of the box, you get a nice calculator that handles rotation beautifully to display more options, and lets you swipe from the bottom in portrait to still get access to these options. The default calendar app looks good, with an Agenda view that shows your various events in order, a day, week, month, and year view. I won't dwell on the camera app, as support for the pinephone camera is still in its infancy, it's rare that it even displays an image. The Clock application lets you add various clocks from all around the world, start a timer, or use a stopwatch. Swiping from the bottom in the "clock" tab lets you create alarms, although I would have preferred alarms to be a full tab in the app instead of hiding that behind a swipe. The contacts app does what you'd expect, list your contacts and allow to set some as favorites and you can swipe from the bottom to create a new one. The file manager looks good, although it's a bit slow to start, and lets you create files, and change how the directories look. The messaging app works as you'd expect, letting you type messages and send them to your contacts. You can also swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to start a new message. The web browser is alright, if a bit slow to start. It lets you pick your search engine and homepage, and display web pages in desktop mode, but there are no sync capabilities for history, bookmarks, or passwords, so it's not going to be fantastic to use. There is also a terminal app that looks really good and has quick aliases in the bottom left corner. The Notes app is also pretty competent, letting you swipe up from the bottom to create a new note, and syncs with evernote. This leaves us with the phone dialer, letting you pick a contact, or just type the number you want to call, and the weather app, which is really black and white and pretty spartan, and it reminds me of a windows phone app. ## The Settings The settings page uses a sensible icon grid. Ubuntu Touch is pretty barebones in that regard: in terms of customization, you can change the wallpaper, the ringtone for calls and messages, and that's about it. A few apps let you switch to a dark mode in the settings, and some offer to respect a "system preference", but that's not something I could find in the settings. ## The AppStore The OpenStore serves as the App Store for Ubuntu Touch. It's not a package manager like you could find on other Mobile Linux alternatives: no way to download a desktop program here, at least not graphically. You'll get apps that were made specifically for ubuntu touch, and there are around 400 of these in total. You can also get a few Matrix clients, and a nice email client called Dekko 2, among other applications. Updates are handled in the system settings, with over the air updates for the system itself, and for the apps, grouped at the same place.
